The INOS proposal tackles the design and implementation of an intelligent miniaturised optic sensor, capable of acquiring, storing, processing and transmitting still images and video data. The component will embed into a single package the necessary sensing, processing, storage, control and wireless networking subsystems, yielding a true system-in-a-package with intelligent multi-sensory abilities. The component will connect to authorised clients/hosts through standard wireless interfaces (i.e. 802.11x and/or Bluetooth) and will be able to deliver raw or processed data (i.e. video streams and/or still images), according to the client system's needs. The component will accept configuration and control commands and will be able to control actuators (for positioning, lens and iris control etc.) with minimum external components. 

The driving force is to reduce significantly cost, size, and power consumption of image and video acquisition systems and to increase the versatility, integration and ease of installation of such systems. These improvements, augmented with increased processing capabilities, wireless network interfaces and integrated S/W applications, will allow the introduction and seamless integration of audiovisual sensing and perception to ANY IT device ANYWHERE, thus adding visual sensory capability to ambient intelligence. In order to reduce the cost and increase the versatility of the component, the consortium will investigate advanced packaging techniques in order to exploit cost effective and/or state of the art subsystems (produced in unbonded die form) as they become available in their own VLSI technology. The project will deliver a complete component, a system level demonstrator, techno-economic studies on advanced packaging technologies and design methodologies for wireless system in a package.
